Jayla Simon is an undergraduate student in her final semester at Michigan State University (MSU), studying Social Relations and Policy and Comparative Cultures and Politics, with a focus on environmental justice, at James Madison College. Born to native Chicagoans and advocates of equity in public education, Jayla values her opportunity to dedicate time to researching and disseminating knowledge to create a more just and sustainable world. Recognized in 2022 for her testimony to the MSU Board of Trustees on behalf of student groups advocating for fossil fuel divestment, Jayla began working as a research assistant specializing in the circular economy for the MSU Center for Community and Economic Development. Notably, she is engaged in research regarding university impact investing through Community Development Financial Institutions and continually supports legislation efforts, as well as grant writing and policy brief writing related to researching and advancing a Circular Economy. As part of her most prominent work developing “Domicology—Creating a Sustainable Built Environment,” the nation’s first-ever exhibit highlighting the “life cycle” of the built environment and its complementary travel package and outreach efforts, Jayla hopes that conceptualizing Domicological visions and concepts in a digestible way will facilitate areas for collaborative transformation, advocacy, and innovation in obtaining a more just and sustainable future, especially in communities most impacted by structural abandonment and blight.
