Crafting a Shared Vision

By Dr. John Monberg, College of Arts & Letters, Michigan State University

To respond effectively to the challenges of the 21st century—economic vibrancy, social equity, environmental sustainability and more—communities need a shared vision of the future.

I’m Dr. John Monberg, and I’ve worked with dozens of students and community stakeholders to create the 'Our Michigan Ave' website (http://www.ourmichiganave.org), a communication space for residents to express their opinions, learn about ideas from other cities, and most importantly share improvement ideas for major new urban development projects.

The Our Michigan Ave project is meant to serve as a model, integrating community engagement, design thinking, and best urban design practices for medium-sized Midwestern cities. We’ve learned a lot over the past five years about topics ranging from software development to tax increment financing. We’d love to work with additional partners, please email me at jmonberg@msu.edu.
